AIG Hospitals Chairman Dr Nageshwar Reddy honoured with Legend of Endoscopy Award in Tokyo

Hyderabad: Renowned Indian gastroenterologist and Padma Bhusan Awardee Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy has achieved yet another milestone in his journey by becoming the first Indian doctor to receive the prestigious ‘Legends of Endoscopy’ award by a group of Japanese gastroenterologists.

This honour was presented to him in recognition of his lifetime contribution to the advancement of gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy. Dr. Reddy, who is the founder and chairman of the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) Hospitals in Hyderabad, received the award at the Tokyo Live Global Endoscopy event held at Showa Medical University in Japan. 

During the event, Dr Reddy performed a live demonstration of complex endoscopic procedures, showcasing the use of cutting-edge techniques to manage difficult biliary and pancreatic stones and shared insights into evolving tools and technologies that can enhance safety and precision in such complex GI endoscopy procedures.

Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy is a well-known name in the world of gastroenterology. An alumnus of Kurnool Medical College, he is the chairman and founder of the largest gastroenterology hospital in the world - Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) Hospitals, Hyderabad. Throughout his illustrious career, he has received numerous national and international recognitions, including the Padma Shri in 2002 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016.

In 2013, he was also awarded the Rudolf V. Schindler Award, the highest category in the prestigious Crystal Awards named after Schindler, who is considered “the father of gastroscopy” by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE).

An elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, he was given the world's highest gastroenterology award in Shanghai, China, at a function held in September 2013. 

Medical Dialogues had reported that Dr Reddy was also honoured with “The Johns Hopkins Captain's Chair,” a historic precedence from the time of Sir William Osler, the founding professor of the Johns Hopkins University. The honour was bestowed on him by Prof Anne Marie Lennon, Director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, during the annual conference, PANCREAS 2024.

With this latest award from Japan, Dr Reddy has proven that he is considered the top doctors in the world in the field of gastroenterology. The award was presented by Dr Haruhiro Inoue, professor and chairman, Digestive Diseases Centre, Showa University Koto Toyosu Hospital, Tokyo, in the presence of Dr Shinji Tanaka, president, Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society and Professor Emeritus, Hiroshima University.

Speaking at the event as reported by Deccan Chronicle, Dr Haruhiro Inoue said, “Dr Nageshwar Reddy has truly revolutionised endoscopic practice globally. His innovations, especially the Nagi stent, have saved countless lives and brought relief to patients in the most challenging clinical scenarios. His work bridges clinical excellence with global need for accessible healthcare, a rare and invaluable combination in modern medicine.”

In response to the honour, Dr Reddy said, “It is a profound privilege to be recognised by Japan gastroenterologists. This award is more than a personal milestone and stands as a testament to the collaborative spirit of endoscopists worldwide. I remain committed to innovation, education, and service to patients, which have always been the cornerstones of my journey in GI endoscopy.”

AIG Hospitals is an advanced 800-bed super-speciality hospital, with Centres of Excellence (CoE) in Medical and Surgical Gastroenterology, Oncology, Cardiac Sciences, Renal Diseases and Metabolic Sciences.
