Doctor found dead in ICU after night duty at Guwahati private hospital

Guwahati: A 41-year-old doctor working at a private hospital in Guwahati was found dead in an ICU room on Wednesday morning, prompting police to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.  

The deceased was identified as an ICU physician and was found unresponsive by hospital staff in an ICU room on the second floor. 

According to the PTI report, the doctor was on night duty at the hospital on Tuesday and was found unresponsive by hospital staff the following morning, they said.

Senior doctors were called in, and they declared him dead, police said.

According to hospital authorities, the deceased had been working as an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) physician at the hospital for the past six years. He arrived at the hospital at around 8 pm on Tuesday and remained there overnight.

According to the hospital owner, the deceased, an emergency medicine specialist, had complained of abdominal pain to the nurse on night duty. He had reportedly administered medicine and an injection to himself through an intravenous drip. 

Speaking to India Today NE, Soroj Doley, officer-in-charge of the concerned police station, said, “He injected a high dose of sedative, possibly Propofol, into his veins, and this could be the reason for his death. As per the initial investigation, this looks like a suicide, but we are looking at all possible aspects.''

Police said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, including the possibility of suicide. 

He was also reportedly experiencing mental distress, they said.

“An overdose of Propofol can lead to serious conditions, including respiratory depression, cardiovascular depression and potentially cardiorespiratory arrest. We do not know the exact cause of death as of now, and it will be clearer only after we receive the postmortem report,” Bezbaruah said. 

The body has been sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for postmortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death, they added.
