New Delhi: With the anticipation of the retirement of Dr. Randeep Gulleria, Director, AIIMS, New Delhi, building around, President, AIIMS in a recent memorandum has extended  the tenure of Dr. Randeep Gulleria w.e.f 25.03.2022 by three months or by the time the new Director is appointed, whichever is earlier.

" President, AIIMS is pleased to extend his tenure w.e.f 25.03.2022 by three months or by the time new Director is appointed, whichever is earlier," a recent order by the Deputy director admin, AIIMS stated

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that with Dr Guleria nearing retirement, many top doctors of the country are in the race for the coveted position of AIIMS director.The present director-general of the ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) Dr. Balram Bhargava, is one of the 32 candidates who are contending for the post of Director of the AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences), Delhi.

As per many media accounts,  there are around 32 candidates who are in the race for the post, among whom, the ICMR chief's name is at the top.

12 of the 32 candidates are from AIIMS including M.V. Padma Srivastava, chief of neurosciences centre; Nikhil Tandon, head of department of endocrinology; Rajesh Malhotra, head of orthopedics and chief of trauma centre; Sunil Chumber, head of surgery among others.

There are four members in the search cum selection committee who are expected to shortlist some names from the 32 candidates. The shortlisted names would be eventually sent to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by the prime minister for final approval. In the meanwhile, Dr Guleria, whose tenure was supposed to end on 24th of this month will now see an extension for either 3 months, or till the time someone is appointed by the government 

"Other terms & condition of his appointment would be in accordance with the Rules of the Institute," stated the office order of his extension

Dr. Guleria joined AIIMS as an assistant professor in 1992 and has been the HoD of the department of pulmonary medicine and sleep disorders, since April, 2011. Dr. Guleria was conferred with the prestigious "Padma Shri" Award in 2015 by the President of India and recently with "Dr. B.C. Roy Award in the category Eminent Medical Person" for the year 2014. 

Dr. Guleria has been a dedicated teacher for undergraduate, postgraduate and DM fellows for the last 30 years. He has been actively involved in taking classes for undergraduate students in the area of respiratory medicine. He has been at the forefront during the COVID-19 pandemic, spearheading the patient care at the most prestigious medical institute in the country. 

The faculty cell of AIIMS had issued the advertisement for the post of new director on November 29, with the last date for submitting the application being December 29, reports the business-standard.
