Centre appoints Dr Simpson Sareo as Part-Time Member of National Medical Commission

Imphal: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has appointed Dr. Simpson Sareo, a senior medical professional from the Manipur Medical Council, as a part-time member of the National Medical Commission (NMC). The appointment is seen as a significant recognition of his longstanding contribution to the healthcare sector, both in Manipur and at the national level.

Dr. Sareo holds an MBBS degree from Gauhati University and an MD in Biochemistry from Manipur University. Over the years, he has held several key positions in Manipur’s healthcare system. His professional journey includes serving as the Head of the Biochemistry Unit and Additional Medical Superintendent at JN Hospital in Imphal, as well as Chief Medical Officer of Senapati district. He has also worked as an Additional Director in the Manipur Health Services.

In addition to his clinical and administrative roles, Dr. Sareo has undertaken various specialised training programmes. These include an Associate Fellowship in Industrial Health (AFIH) from the Directorate General Factory Advice Service & Labour Institutes (DGFASLI), Ministry of Labour and Employment, and professional development courses from the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM). He also received training in food safety and drug quality control at the Central Food Technological Research Institute in Mysore and underwent project planning and implementation training at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Calcutta.

Currently serving as the Vice-President of the Manipur Medical Council, Dr. Sareo is also a member of the State Commission for Scheduled Tribes. He has previously held the position of President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Manipur State Branch. In recognition of his exemplary service, he was conferred with the “Recognition of Distinguished Service” award by the IMA, Manipur State Branch.

Dr. Sareo is also a member of the Medical Advisory Council of the NMC, further amplifying his role in shaping healthcare policies in the country. Talking to Medical Dialogues, Dr. Sareo stated, “The worst problem that the healthcare professionals have now is in the cases of violence. It is important to ensure the safety of on-duty doctors. The doctors also need to ensure proper communication with the patient’s kin to deescalate any situation of tension. I am really happy that I got to represent Manipur in the apex medical body, I will make sure to highlight the health-related problems of the region.”
