Cyber Fraud Dupes Mumbai Dermatologist of Rs 40000, FIR Lodged

Mumbai: In yet another incident of cyber crime has come to light when a Mumbai-Based doctor has been recently cheated of Rs 40000 by a cyber fraudster who allegedly duped her by posing as a customer care executive of the bank. 

The complainant has been identified as a 43-year-old dermatologist on the basis of whose complaint the Tilak Nagar police registered a First Information Report (FIR) on April 5, reports the Indian Express.

According to the doctor, the incident took place around 4.50 PM on February 7 when she got a phone call from the accused. The latter said that he was calling from the ICICI bank, adding that her credit card had been blocked as she had failed to update her know-your-customer (KYC) details. 

However, later the doctor received a different phone call from another number, and the Truecaller application on her phone number showed the number to be 'ICICI bank helpline'. She, therefore, trusted that the call was from the bank, due to which she followed the instructions provided by the accused to create a one-time password on her phone. 

When she shared the OTP with the caller, an amount of Rs 40,000 was debited from her account, states the FIR, as per the Indian Express report. After realizing that she was duped, the woman called the bank asking them to block transactions, and subsequently went to the police station to file a complaint.

The Medical Dialogues had earlier reported a similar incident of cheating where two persons who allegedly cheated two students of Rs 45 lakh each on the pretext of securing admission to a medical college in Narhe were arrested by the Pune police. According to the police, the two students could not get admission to the medical college in Narhe. The accused persons had contacted them and assured them of providing admissions if they make a payment of Rs 45 lakh each.
