Extortion

New Delhi: A doctor at a private hospital in Delhi's Paschim Vihar has alleged that he received an extortion call in which the caller demanded Rs 25 lakh and claimed to be associated with a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, police said on Monday.

The accused, a 35-year-old man, has been arrested. Police said the caller allegedly claimed to have access to his personal details, including his car registration number and his wife’s name.

The complainant, a senior doctor at a private hospital, received the threatening call on his mobile phone on October 2. The accused allegedly demanded Rs 25 lakh and claimed to have access to his personal details, including his car registration number and wife’s name, police said.

According to PTI, a case was registered at the Paschim Vihar East police station following the complaint. A joint team was formed with personnel from the police station and the Special Staff to nab the accused. The team used technical and human intelligence to trace the mobile number used for making the extortion calls.

The complainant was asked to remain in touch with the accused and record their conversations. Subsequently, the accused allegedly asked him to bring the extortion money near a hospital at Rohini on October 2, a police officer said.

Police laid a trap at the spot and apprehended the accused when he arrived to collect the money. The accused was identified as a resident of Pooth Gram Sabha, the officer said.

A mobile phone and a SIM card allegedly used to make the extortion calls, along with the car allegedly used by him during the offence, were seized, police said.

During interrogation, the accused told police that he committed the offence to meet his financial needs. Police said he was previously involved in two cases, including one for extortion registered at the Subhash Place police station in 2018 and another lodged at the Preet Vihar police station in 2020.

Further investigation is underway, police said.
