Silchar: Professor Dr Abhijit Swami has been appointed as the new Principal cum Chief Superintendent of Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH, Assam. He succeeds Prof. (Dr.) Bhaskar Gupta, who was serving as the principal-cum-chief superintendent of the institution.

Dr. Siddharth Singh, Commissioner & Secretary to the Govt. of Assam, Medical Education & Research Department, issued a notification stating, “In the interest of public service, Prof. (Dr.) Bhaskar Gupta, Professor, Department of Dermatology, Silchar Medical College & Hospital and Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent (i/c), Silchar Medical College & Hospital is hereby relieved from the charge of Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent (l/c). Silchar Medical College & Hospital, with immediate effect.”

“Prof. (Dr.) Abhijit Swami, Professor, Department of Medicine, Silchar Medical College & Hospital, will also hold the charge of Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent (i/c), Silchar Medical College & Hospital, with immediate effect and until further orders,” the notification further added.

Dr. Abhijit Swami is a physician and medical academic with experience in clinical practice. He completed his MBBS from Gauhati University between 1984 and 1989, followed by an MD in Medicine from Assam University from 1993 to 1995.  

He was awarded the Fellowship of the Indian College of Physicians (FICP) in February 2014. Dr Swami has been associated with Silchar Medical College since 2012 and currently serves as a Professor in the Department of Medicine, contributing to medical education and clinical practice.  

MLA Rajdeep Goala congratulated the doctor, stating, “I wish Dr. Swami success in his new responsibilities and hope that under his leadership, SMCH continues to grow and provide better healthcare services to the people.”   

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for a 50-bed Critical Care Block at SM Dev Civil Hospital in Silchar. Spanning 6,335 square meters, the block will consist of the ground floor plus four additional stories.
