Dr B Unnikrishnan, Dr Shiran Shetty conferred Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh

Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) felicitated the two doctors in recognition of their notable achievements and contributions in their respective fields during a special ceremony held in Manipal on June 9.

Dr B Unnikrishnan and Dr Shiran Shetty were recently elected as Fellows of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCP Edin), a globally recognised professional distinction conferred upon physicians who have demonstrated excellence and significant contributions to medicine, healthcare, medical education, research, and public health. 

Dr B Unnikrishnan currently serves as Dean and Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at KMC, Mangalore, and has made significant contributions to epidemiology, preventive medicine, and public health research. Dr Shiran Shetty, Professor and Unit Head, Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, at Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal, Deputy Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, has earned recognition for his contributions to clinical practice, medical education, research, and patient care.

Dr. B. Unnikrishnan completed his MBBS from Pt.J.N.M Medical College, Raipur and Postgraduate (MD) in Community Medicine from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. Started the Career as Assistant Professor in the Dept of Community Medicine at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. Dr. B. Unnikrishnan has been instrumental in starting mentorship program in research for medical students and has successfully incorporated research in medical education curriculum. He is currently collaborating with many national and international organizations like Global Burden of Disease Network, World Health Organization & ICMR for generating Evidence for Policy decisions.

Dr Shiran Shetty completed his MBBS from Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute. At KMC Manipal, he has been serving as a Professor since January 2019 and has also held the position of Deputy Medical Superintendent since February 2023. Dr Shetty has gained international clinical exposure through an Advanced Endoscopic Fellowship at Ordensklinikum Elisabethinen Hospital, Austria, from September to December 2019. Earlier, he worked as a Clinical Visiting Fellow at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong, between November and December 2014. His academic and administrative roles reflect extensive experience in medical education, hospital management, and advanced clinical practice.

Both Dr Unnikrishnan and Dr Shiran Shetty have demonstrated exemplary commitment to their respective domains, and their accomplishments reflect the values of academic and professional excellence upheld at MAHE.” The felicitation ceremony was attended by senior leadership and faculty members. Dr Dilip G Naik, Pro Vice Chancellor, Mangalore Campus, welcomed the gathering, and Dr P Giridhar Kini, Registrar of MAHE proposed the vote of thanks.
