Eminent cardiologist Dr Manjunath Desai dies at 45

Panaji: Renowned Cardiologist Dr Manjunath Desai, head of Cardiology department, Goa Medical College passed away on Sunday morning after a prolonged illness at his residence in Borim. He was 45 years old.

Dr Desai had played a very important role in establishing the cardiology department of GMC and had been working there for around eight years. Many people expressed their condolences on social media.

Goa Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant said, "Saddened to learn about the demise of eminent cardiologist Dr. Manjunath Desai. His medical skills saved the lives of thousands of patients. My deepest condolences to his family."

Health Minister of the state, Vishwajith Rane expressed, "The demise of Dr. Manjunath Desai is not only a loss to GMC, but it is a personal loss to me. He was an exceptional and wonderful person inside out who has touched so many lives. It is a great loss to Goa. We will miss Dr. Manjunath."

Expressing shock over the demise of one of the most respected kindhearted young cardiologists of Goa, leader of the opposition Digambar Kamat added, "Thank you, Dr. Manjunath Desai, for saving so many lives. You will remain in our hearts forever. My condolences to his family, friends, and patients."

Meanwhile, Oncologist Dr Shekhar Salkar appealed to the state government to name GMC's cardiology department/ward/Cathlab after late Dr. Manjunath Desai to remember his contribution as he played an instrumental role in setting up the cardiology department. Former South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar also added that the suggestion to name the department in the memory of Dr. Desai is worth considering, as per a media report in Herald Goa.

As per a recent media report in Times of India, many other politicians also expressed their condolences. Govind Gaude, minister of Arts and Culture, said that the cardiologist was a friend of the poor and savior of many, adding that Goa has lost a gem.

TMC national vice president Luizinho Faleiro also added that the sincere and dedicated service of Dr. Desai would always be remembered. He also appealed to the government to recognize and honor him for his service to Goans. Many other ministers including Union Minister Shripad Naik, Ports Minister Michael Lobo, and MLAs Rohan Khaunte, Carlos Almeida, Glenn Ticlo, Joshua D'Souza, BJP president Sadanand Shet Tanavade, Congress president Girish Chodankar, AAP State convenor Rahul Mhambre expressed condolences over his demise.
