Guwahati: Relinquishing her position of Vice-Chancellor (VC) at the Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS), Assam, renowned Prof (Dr.) Dipika Deka has decided to go back to the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), New Delhi. She rejoined AIIMS on February 1.

Dr Deka graduated with her MBBS degree from the Gauhati Medical College in 1977. She stood first in her MBBS examination and had been awarded a gold medal for this. Prof. Deka pursued her post-graduation degree from the same college. She earned her MD in Obstetrics & Gynaecology from the college in 1982.

The eminent professor had earned the World Health Organisation Fellowship in 1999 and ICMR Senior Scientist Fellowship in 2010. Prof. Deka has been the author of 5 books and 60 chapters in books. She has 255 publications including 141 International ones.

Although she joined AIIMS, New Delhi as a senior resident in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, soon she had become a faculty there. The ex-professor of the same department, Prof. Deka had been made the Chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine Superspeciality of AIIMS, New Delhi. After serving at AIIMS, New Delhi from 1983 to 2018, she had been made the Director of AIIMS, Kalyani, West Bengal.

With her passion to work for the development of the institution, Prof. Deka joined SSUHS on April 11, 2019. Since then, she has worked tirelessly to build SSUHS as a research and publication campus hub of national and international repute.

The Times of India, in its latest media report, adds that as part of the initiative to streamline the Ph.D. program, Prof. Deka has chaired the Research Degree Committee (RDC) Protocol Presentation in August 2020. She had arranged for a Continuing Medical Education (CME) on 'Writing the Ph.D. Synopsis' as well.

She had given approval for 19 proposals related to COVID-19 research and nine under the non-COVID-19 category in the institution. Collaborating with the University of Oxford, Deka took initiatives of a research project titled, 'MaatHRI - Maternal and Perinatal Health Research Collaboration, India', during her tenure, adds TOI.

SSUHS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Assam Science & Technology University in February 2020 under her guidance, reports TOI.

Praising her hard work at SSUHS, the OSD-cum-Deputy Controller of Examination with SSUHS, Prof. (Dr.) Hareswar Mahanta told TOI, "Prof. (Dr.) Dipika Deka ensured that University work didn't suffer even during the impasse that was brought by Covid-19."
