Eminent Pathologist Dr Maya Nanda Passes Away at 85

Bhubaneswar: The medical fraternity of Odisha mourns the passing of eminent pathologist Dr. Maya Nanda, who passed away recently at the age of 85. She had been suffering from a respiratory illness for the past month.

Daughter of noted freedom fighter and respected physician Basanta Kumar Nanda, Dr. Nanda was born in 1940 in Puri. She completed her MBBS from SCB Medical College and went on to achieve the rare distinction of earning dual MD degrees in Biochemistry and Pathology.

Over the course of her illustrious career, Dr. Nanda served as professor and head of the Department of Pathology and also headed the Central Laboratory at MKCG Medical College, VIMSAR, and SCB Medical College. Her leadership in these premier institutions significantly strengthened diagnostic services and advanced medical training in Odisha.

Dr. Nanda also played a pivotal role in establishing the Department of Pathology at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, where she served as professor and head, leaving a legacy in the healthcare sector.

She was the wife of Dr. Bijoy Kishore Ratha, a renowned surgeon and former professor of Surgery, who died in 2019, reports TNIE.
