Panaji: The medical officer while performing his OPD dispensary duties has been allegedly assaulted by the inmate at Colvale Jail. The Goa unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has expressed shock over this unfortunate incident.

It is imperative that adequate security be provided for the doctor and his medical staff to get adequate protection from such attacks by the prisoners," IMA Goa state President Dr. Rufino Monteiro said in a statement.

Stern exemplary punishment should be meted out to the offending prisoner as a deterrent for the future, he said. A murder convict serving a jail term allegedly assaulted a doctor on duty in the jail on Wednesday. He has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

TOI reports that the victim has been identified as Dilip Cuncolikar who has filed a complaint alleging that the convict assaulted him at the jail dispensary OPD while he was performing duties there.

According to Cuncolikar's statement, while he was working, the inmate entered the dispensary with a fish plate and started throwing vegetables, rice, and fish curry in an aggressive way and the doctor felt the spice in his eyes as the inmate threw the fish curry on him which entered into his eyes. Later, the inmate began punching him by grabbing his collar and also threatening him to death.

An FIR was filed under Sections 504, 323, 343, and 506 (2) of the Indian Penal Code alleging the prisoner assaulted a medical officer over a quality issue regarding food daily served.
