Haryana: BAMS doctor caught red-handed for allegedly running illegal abortion centre

Karnal: In an ongoing investigation to crack down against illegal abortion racket in the state, the Haryana health department has arrested a BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) doctor in connection with the case.

The doctor is reportedly running an illegal abortion clinic at a nursing home in Nissing. She was caught red-handed by the officials of the health department following a raid at the nursing home.

Based on several tip-offs regarding the illegal practice at the nursing home, a team of health officials, including Dr Sheenu Chaudhary, Dr Sandeep Abrol, Dr Neeru Bala and others busted the clinic and had taken the doctor into custody on Wednesday.

The doctor has been identified as a BAMS degree holder and the wife of a medical officer of the Health Department posted at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Nissing.

Medical dialogues team had recently reported about a raid at another location in Haryana where three people, including a doctor, were arrested for inter-state illegal abortion racket and sex determination of fetuses in Gurgaon.

According to health officials, a decoy woman was sent to the clinic on Tuesday who was around three months pregnant and voluntarily offered to undergo medical termination of pregnancy (MTP). The doctor and the decoy finalised their deal at Rs 18,000.

Following this, the woman paid Rs 9,500 in advance for the abortion. Later she was admitted to the nursing home on the same day and her surgery was scheduled for Wednesday.

The officials who were hiding near immediately caught the doctor red-handed and recovered the money from her possession as well as arrested her. It came to light that she was running the clinic without any authorization.

“We were getting information for the past few days about the illegal activities being carried out at this clinic, after which a decoy woman was prepared who was around three months pregnant and voluntarily offered to undergo MTP," Dr Yogesh Sharma, Civil Surgeon told, The Tribune

“The process of MTP was started on Tuesday. As soon as the operation was conducted on Wednesday, our team members raided the clinic and arrested the doctor red-handed,” he added.

“We are vigilant about any illegal practices regarding sex determination or illegal abortion. We have conducted several successful raids in the past in various districts of Haryana as well as of UP and Punjab,” Dr Sharma maintained.

Medical equipment and drugs were recovered and seized at the operation theatre by the team.

A case was registered against the doctor at Nissing police station under Sections 3, 4, and 5 of the MTP Act and 420 of the IPC.
