According to an official order issued by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), the Senior Resident in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at IGMC was removed from service with immediate effect under Clause-9 of the Resident Doctor Policy, 2025.
The action followed the findings of a three-member disciplinary inquiry committee constituted by the IGMC administration after a video of the incident went viral on social media, news agency UNI reported.
Medical Dialogues recently reported that the senior resident doctor from the Pulmonary Medicine department at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), who overnight became the centre of controversy and was suspended after a viral video allegedly showing him punching a patient multiple times in the face, has clarified his side of the story. He claimed that the patient became angry, abused him and physically assaulted him first.

The committee, which submitted its preliminary report to the government, examined video footage, statements of those involved, and hospital records related to the incident that occurred on December 22.
The inquiry found that a physical scuffle had taken place between the patient, identified as Arjun, aged 36, and the doctor during a dispute in the Pulmonary Medicine ward.
The report noted that the conduct of both parties — the doctor as well as the patient and attendants — amounted to misconduct and misbehaviour.
However, the disciplinary committee observed contributory fault on both sides; it recommended strict action against the doctor, citing violation of service conduct rules and the Resident Doctor Policy.
Following these recommendations, the DMER initially placed the doctor under suspension pending investigation and subsequently terminated his residency services after perusal of the inquiry report.
The order also noted that an FIR had already been registered against the doctor on the complaint of the patient’s attendants and that the matter remains under police investigation.
Separately, a government-constituted inquiry committee has been directed to conduct a detailed probe into all aspects of the incident and submit a fact-finding report within 72 hours.
The incident had sparked protests by patients’ relatives and sections of the public at IGMC, with demands for immediate action against the accused doctor.
Hospital authorities said the situation is under control and reiterated that the government maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards violence and misconduct in healthcare institutions.
Senior officials stated that further action, if any, will be taken after the final inquiry report and the outcome of the police investigation.
