Mangaluru: A Mangaluru-based medical oncologist, Dr Guruprasad Bhat, has become the first person from the city to complete an English Channel relay swim as part of a six-member Indian team.

The team completed the crossing from England to France in 13 hours and 5 minutes, according to Deccan Herald. The English Channel is regarded as one of the world's most demanding endurance swims because of its cold waters, strong tides, unpredictable weather, heavy shipping traffic, and the presence of jellyfish.

Last year, Dr. Guruprasad crossed the finish line of an Ironman. During the relay swim, the team adhered to the English Channel relay rules and followed standard protocol, like wearing swimwear, caps, and goggles, blinkers for visibility, and taking turns in the water. According to the daily, the swimmers took turns in the water, with each person swimming for about two to three hours during the 13-hour crossing.

Congratulating Dr Bhat, a social media page posted, “The English Channel isn’t just another swim. It’s freezing cold water, unpredictable currents, relentless waves, jellyfish, and hours of staying calm when every instinct tells you to stop. Over the past year, we transitioned his training from becoming Ironman-ready to preparing for long- distance open water swimming. Watching that plan come to life in one of the world’s most iconic swims has been incredibly rewarding.”
Dr. Guruprasad is a true ultramarathoner who’s braved wild trails, high altitudes, and freezing winds to chase his passion across India by running from Dandeli to Ladakh in 2025, added the post.

Dr Bhat is a leading oncologist in Mangaluru and is currently working as Chief Medical Oncologist at Kanachur Institute of Medical Science. After completing his post-graduation in medicine, he underwent training in medical oncology for a period of 3 yrs from 2011 to 2014 at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore, which is one of the most reputed and largest cancer centres in India.

Later, he joined KMC, Mangalore as Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine. Got an opportunity to start oncology services in February 2015 and started the Department of Oncology at Yenepoya Medical College.
