Mumbai: In a shocking and unfortunate incident, a senior resident doctor from JJ Hospital, Mumbai, who was soon to be appointed as a lecturer, went missing after reportedly jumping into the creek from the Atal Setu bridge on Monday night, prompting a massive search operation.

Moments before the incident, the 32-year-old doctor called his mother at around 9.11 pm and told her that he would be coming home for dinner. CCTV footage from the bridge connecting Mumbai and Navi Mumbai captured the doctor suddenly stopping his car in the middle of the road, stepping out, climbing the side wall, and then jumping directly into the creek.

It is unclear why the doctor jumped into the creek, and the police are investigating thoroughly to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Meanwhile, the police have launched a massive search operation to locate his body, which has been ongoing for over 12 hours.

According to a doctor who shared the information on a social media platform, the 32-year-old doctor was on the verge of becoming a lecturer and specialized in general surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and proctology. Previously, he also served as the general secretary of the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors.

As per a Free Press Journal news report, the incident took place around 9:43 PM on July 7 when the Atal Setu Control Room received a call from a person who witnessed the doctor jumping. The caller, a motorist, stated that an individual had jumped off the bridge at the 11,800-km mark on the Mumbai-bound lane.

Responding promptly, police teams and beat marshals rushed to the spot and discovered a Honda Amaze car (MH 46 CM 6837) and an iPhone abandoned at the location. Upon checking the phone, the police found that the doctor had called his mother before jumping off the bridge, reports Mathrubhumi.

Following the incident, search operations were launched using the 'Dhruvtara' boat and specialized search teams to locate him in the creek. As of now, there has been no sign of the missing doctor.

Senior police inspector Arjun Rajane from Ulwe police station said, "He was unmarried and resided in Panvel. Reason behind the extreme step is not known yet. He has not left any note behind. We have verified the footage from the control room at Atal Setu."

Further, the police have appealed to citizens to share any information that could assist in the search.
