Mob attack at Tripura Hospital: 5 jailed for allegedly thrashing on-duty doctor
Agartala: A group of villagers staged a demonstration in Kailashahar police station of Unokoti district on Wednesday after police arrested five people in connection with the incident of attacks on the on-duty doctor and vandalising the hospital at Kanika Memorial Hospital in Unokoti district on June 25.
The victim has been undergoing treatment at Agartala Govt. Medical College.
A group of people stormed the hospital with two dead bodies and three injured people who fell in a traffic accident in the locality.
As the conditions were serious, the doctor referred all the injured patients to the district hospital in Kailasahar, but the ambulance was not available to transport the patients, which irked the people.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about the incident where an on-duty doctor at Kanika Memorial Primary Health Centre at Singirbil in Kailashahar became a subject of alleged violence and assault by an angry mob of more than 100 people who brutally thrashed the doctor and vandalised the hospital property and an ambulance. The hospital service was closed soon after the incident while police were deployed to de-escalate tension.
The irritated mob ransacked the hospital and destroyed the ambulance parked there.
The doctor on duty at the hospital was attacked badly, and his nose was broken. They were allegedly prevented from going to take the doctor for better treatment.
Based on a complaint, police on Wednesday arrested as many as five people from Mylong ADC village in connection with the incident, and the local court sent them to jail. Enraged by this, a group of men and women from the village demonstrated in front of the Kailasahar police station and staged a protest seeking the release of the arrested people.
However, the police didn’t accept the demand but assured them that the next course of action would be taken after consultation with the villagers.
Police also asked them to cooperate with the investigation to find out the culprits who thrashed the doctor and vandalised the hospital.
