On-duty Paediatrician assaulted by patient's father, demanding immediate attention
Alipurduar: Yet another unfortunate incident of assault against the frontline warriors, the police have arrested a patient's father for allegedly assaulting an on-duty doctor as the doctor asked for some time before examining the latter's child who was suffering from gastroenteritis. The incident took place at the state general hospital in Birpara of Alipurduar.
The doctor has been identified as Dr Sanjay Das, who is a child specialist at the hospital and the father has been identified as Saith Sharma a.k.a. David, who is a resident of Subhashpally in Birpara.
As per the sources of The Telegraph, Sharma took his three-year-old son who was suffering from gastroenteritis to the hospital and admitted him on Monday. Sharma was asking Dr. Das to examine his child first as he needed immediate attention. When Dr. Das asked Sharma to have patience as there were other patients who need medical attention as well and that he will soon check on his son. Hearing this, Sharma allegedly grabbed the doctor by the collar and threw his head against the wall, as well as beating him.

Soon after, hospital staff and community volunteers arrived at the scene and carefully rescued the doctor from the man. A complaint was lodged against Sharma by Dr. Das with Birpara police. Kuntal Banerjee, the additional SP, Jaigaon told that "It is an unfortunate incident. We have arrested the accused."
Nowadays it can be seen that doctors and nurses are getting assaulted on a daily basis. Doctors providing treatment to the patients are now getting treatment for their own wounds. Angered and afraid of the situation additional hospital doctors and paramedics of the hospital submitted a memorandum on Tuesday to the police station demanding that a permanent police camp be put up at the hospital for their protection.
Meanwhile, the hospital superintendent, Koushik Kayal informed that "All of us are feeling insecure after the incident. We have informed our senior officials to take necessary steps."
Doctors at the hospital said that Sharma's son is now in a stable condition and Dr. Das has been given the necessary treatment.
Sharma was brought before a local court in Alipurduar on Tuesday and was sentenced to 14 days of judicial custody by the court.
