Medical Negligence

Hazaribag: A 50-year-old man died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Itkhori, Jharkhand's Chatra district, on Tuesday, triggering tension after his relatives and villagers allegedly vandalised the facility, officials said.

According to reports, the man was reportedly admitted to the hospital around 1:30 am on Monday after complaining of chest pain. According to his family, his condition deteriorated during the night.

The deceased’s relatives alleged that they had requested that he be referred to Hazaribag for better treatment. However, they claimed that the doctor’s father asked them to wait, stating that the doctor would arrive shortly. The family further alleged that he died soon after a nurse administered an injection.

Speaking to Live Hindustan, the deceased's daughter alleged that the doctor refused to refer her father despite his condition not improving, leading to his death.

The doctor involved in the treatment, however, denied the allegations, describing them as baseless. He said the patient had been provided proper treatment and died due to other causes.

Following his death, relatives and villagers allegedly ransacked parts of the hospital, prompting police intervention.

Personnel from Itkhori police station and Dial 112 brought the situation under control under the supervision of DSP (headquarters) Sunil Kumar Singh. Four persons, including a doctor and a nurse, were detained, reports TOI.

Police station in-charge Abhishek Kumar Singh and Circle Officer Sabita Singh also reached the hospital and took custody of the body.

Meanwhile, village council representatives Santosh Ram, Jaikumar Das, Mahendra Das and Lokesh Das, along with social workers, were present as the body was sent for post-mortem.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the man's death as well as the alleged vandalism at the hospital.
