Deceased patient's kin assault doctors, vandalise ICU equipment at Indore Hospital

Indore: Tension prevailed at the government Super Speciality Hospital in Indore on Tuesday evening after relatives of a 60-year-old woman allegedly assaulted doctors and medical staff and damaged life-saving equipment following her death in the intensive care unit (ICU).

According to news reports, the woman had been admitted to the hospital’s ICU in a critical condition and was undergoing treatment under the supervision of doctors. She died at around 7 pm inside the ICU on the sixth floor of the hospital.

Soon after the family was informed about her death, her relatives allegedly confronted doctors and nursing staff over the treatment provided to the woman.

Speaking to Free Press Journal, eyewitnesses said that doctors initially tried to calm the family members. However, the argument soon escalated, and a young man from the family allegedly assaulted doctors and medical staff. He also allegedly picked up life-saving equipment kept inside the ICU and threw it. The sudden violence caused panic among medical staff, other patients, and their relatives.

Fearing for their safety, doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers reportedly left the ICU. The incident disrupted medical services in the sensitive unit for some time.

Police were alerted following the violence and reached the hospital to bring the situation under control.

Following the alleged assault, doctors, nurses and other medical staff reportedly refused to re-enter the ICU, citing concerns over their safety.

The situation led to a prolonged standoff, during which the woman’s body remained inside the ICU while police attempted to mediate between the hospital authorities, medical staff and the family.

After discussions, an arrangement was reportedly reached under which five members of the family would be allowed to enter the ICU along with a doctor, in the presence of police personnel.

Meanwhile, hospital security personnel stopped the media outside the hospital gate and did not allow visuals to be recorded inside. Papers were also pasted on the ICU’s glass panels to block the view, reports Free Press Journal.
