Punjab: Doctor booked after wife allegedly harassed for dowry burns self to death

Ludhiana: A doctor and his family members were recently booked for allegedly harassing his wife for dowry, who set herself on fire and succumbed to burn injuries on Tuesday morning.

The deceased woman married the doctor almost 3 years ago and the couple had a baby girl. On Monday night the woman allegedly set herself on fire after which she was taken to the nearby hospital. However, she could not be saved and succumbed to her burn injuries on Tuesday morning.

As per various media accounts, the father of the victim alleged that a day before the incident, the doctor had called him and stated that if he do not take the woman back home, she would be killed.

The father who lived in Samrala, about 30 kilometres away from her in-laws' house in Kakowal Majra village, then called the village sarpanch requesting him to ensure her safety. However, the sarpanch assured him that she would be in a good health and also suggested that he should visit the in-laws the very next morning.

Later that night, the doctor's father allegedly informed the victim's father that she has received some burn injuries and she had to be taken to a civil Hospital.
"I wasted no time and rushed to the civil hospital. But my daughter had been referred to the Rajindra Hospital in Patiala by then. She died on the way (Tuesday morning). When I finally got to see her body, I was shocked to find that she had suffered wounds on her head and jaw, and there burn injuries all over her body," the victim's father told

He further alleged that harassment and torture for dowry had started right after marriage. "My daughter had got married to the doctor about three years ago. They have a one-year-old daughter. He as well as her family members used to frequently assault my daughter," claimed the father.
The father further stated that previously the matter was raised the village panchayat and some responsible people in the village intervened to settle the issue but the deceased kept on suffering abuse abuse at her in-laws' house. Regretting that he did not bring his daughter home at the right time, the father added, "My son-in-law told me that he would kill my daughter if I didn't take her home. Had I brought her back home on time, she would have been alive today."
Times Now reports, that the doctor husband of the deceased, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law has been booked under sections 304 B (dowry death) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
However, none of the accused has been arrested yet. Investigating officer, Puran Singh of Sahnewal police station, informed that police are investigating the case to nab the accused.
