Dr. G. Venugopal Passes Away in Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: A renowned urologist and pioneer of kidney transplant surgery in Kerala, Dr. G. Venugopal, passed away on Monday at the age of 68. He had been undergoing treatment for liver disease and was in intensive care at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram since last week.
Kerala’s medical community is mourning the loss of one of its most respected pioneers, Dr. G. Venugopal. He was a trailblazer in the field of urology and is best known for performing the first-ever kidney transplant surgery in the government sector in Kerala. This landmark surgery took place at the Government Medical College Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram in 2012, when he was serving as the Head of the Urology Department. The achievement marked a significant step forward for public healthcare in the state and opened a new chapter in organ transplantation services.

Dr Venugopal was a resident of Uthradam near the Kochullur Temple Arch. He hailed from the Changanassery Morkulangara Shanmuga Sadanam family. He had been battling liver-related complications for the past four years and succumbed to the illness on Monday afternoon.
Dr. Venugopal completed his MBBS from Kottayam Medical College in 1981, followed by an MS in General Surgery in 1989, and later, an MS in Urology in 1992. Throughout his career, he served not only at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College but also made notable contributions at prominent private hospitals, including Ananthapuri, Gokulam, J.J. Hospital, and Shankars.
