Bengaluru: In a latest development on the controversy surrounding the appointment of new interim Vice-chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), the newly appointed doctor has approached the cybercrime police and lodged a complaint against unknown persons for spreading rumors about him on social media.

The new interim VC of RGUHS, who was earlier the principal of a private dental college, has claimed that people created false news about him and accused him of corruption and facing a criminal case in CBI. Alleging all these rumors as false he has further claimed that this information was circulated on social media to tarnish his image.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that controversy erupted after Dr. Jayakara SM, Principal, AECS Maruthi College of Dental Sciences, was named for taking charge as the interim VC of prestigious RGUHS from June 15 till a full-time VC is appointed or until further orders.

The decision to appoint Jayakara as the acting vice-chancellor of RGUHS was announced through a notification dated June 11 by Governor Vajubhai Vala's secretariat. This is the first time in the history of RGUHS that a principal of a private college has been assigned the position of VC, though as an interim position.

However, the decision has not gone down well with the Professors and Deans of some of the Government Medical Colleges as it was allegedly reported that Jayakara was accused of granting permission to dental colleges to teach postgraduate courses in lieu of bribes. It had been also reported that in 2013, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had allegedly raided Dr. Jayakara's house when he was an executive member of the Dental Council of India.

In fact, the Medical Education Minister, K Sudhakar had also said earlier that Jayakara had allegations of corruptions against him and should not hold administrative posts in educational institutions without getting a clean chit.

Minister Sudhakar had further stated that only a person with eminence, excellent reputation, and track record should be appointed VC and had expressed his surprise for making the dean of a private institution as the acting vice-chancellor of RGUHS.

As per the latest media report by The Hindu, the newly appointed interim VC of RGUHS has refuted all such claims and has filed a complaint before the Cyber cell against unknown persons for spreading rumors against him.

Further raising the issue of many claiming that his appointment was not as per rules, the interim VC lodged a police complaint. His complaint, as per the report by The Hindu stated, "This allegation and false information have been floated in some sections of the print media and also floated on the social media and WhatsApp group to tarnish my image."
