Safdarjung Hospital Resident Doctors complain of lack of hostel rooms

New Delhi: The resident doctors associated with the Safdarjung hospital have complained of lack of hostel rooms to accommodate all of them due to which many are forced to live outside the campus. 

As per a media report in the New Indian Express, there are more than 2000 resident and only 80 hostel rooms are available for them hence, they have been struggling as they have no choice but to live outside the campus because of which travelling becomes a major issue for them in case of emergencies.

A doctor working with the hospital said, "There are around 80-90 hostel rooms for around 2,000 resident doctors. These rooms are given on first come first served basis." He added that the resident doctors have to be available for services 24/7 times, observing that it becomes troublesome for them to keep up between the residence and hospital if they are living outside the campus. 

The issue has caused many resident doctors to complain of stress, with some of them have already resigned in the past. They further complained that the hostel waitlist takes two years to allot rooms. 

A doctor who recently resigned from the hospital said, "You can get allotment it only if you have connections." The doctors stated that they have been raising the issue with the officials but no action has been taken as of yet. They said that the ministry has taken some initiative with relation to constructing new hostels for the doctors, which is still under the pipeline. 

Another issue raised by the doctor includes the unique identification of patients, a system provided in other central government hospitals like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). A doctor associated with the hospital told TNIE, "Under this system, a unique ID of a new patient is created where all the relevant information is added right from testing to the treatments provided to him/her. This helps a doctor get the medical history of the patient."
