Tragic: Senior Gynaecologist succumbs to COVID-19 in Kolkata

Kolkata: In a tragic incident, a 65-year-old Kolkata-based Gynaecologist passed away after putting up a great fight against COVID-19 on Tuesday.

The deceased doctor has been identified as Dr. Sanjoy Sen, senior consultant gynecology and obstetrics in Salt Lake City, Kolkata. He was associated with several famous private facilities of Kolkata. His colleagues confirmed that the medical practitioner was attending his patients amidst the pandemic.

According to a recent media report, he was tested COVID positive last month after which he was rushed to a private facility. However, he had to be shifted to Medica super specialty hospital on the 14th of August after which his condition declined and he was put on ECMO support for the last 16 days.
Doctors confirmed that he had certain co-morbidities like hypothyroidism, borderline diabetes, and was slightly obese which complicated his case.
While explaining the condition of the doctor, the Medica hospital in a press release stated, "he was suffering from COVID-19 infection with severe ARDS. The doctor passed away at 6.25 p.m. on Tuesday in spite of all the best efforts by the clinical care team and ECMO specialists. We at Medica deeply mourn the sad demise of Dr. Sen and extend our deepest condolences to his family friends and well-wishers."
Dr Sen began his career in the UK when he completed FRCOG-2000 London, and his MRCOG-1987 London, UK. He completed his MD from Calcutta University and M.B.B.S from Armed Forces Medical College, Pune. he has been associated with the Mission of Mercy Hospital, AMRI Hospital, Woodlands Hospitals, Fortis Hospital, Consultant, Bhagirathi Neotia Woman & Child Care Centre. He is succeeded by one daughter who was also a doctor and a son, an engineer, and both are working in the US.
Offering his condolences as the demise of the doctor, one of his fellow gynecologist Dr. Jointo Basu who also underwent MBBS training with him at armed forces medical College in Pune told the Times of India that " a thorough gentleman and a committed professional, Sanjay is one of the doctors about whom none in the medical fraternity will have a negative impression."
At least 5 doctors have reportedly passed away after being infected by COVID in Kolkata in August alone. At a time like this when medical practitioners and healthcare workers are extending their services day and night in order to contain the pandemic condition the demise of another COVID warrior and reputed gynecologist has brought grief into the medical community. Many of the doctor's organizations and health care workers have expressed their grief at the demise of the doctor via social media account.
