Twofold Tragedy: Pregnant Doctor Succumbs to Covid-19, Baby dies inside Womb

According to various media reports, Dr Maha Basheer, the deceased doctor was five months pregnant and was originally a native of Kozhikode, Kerala. However, she pursued her schooling at Delhi Private School in Sharjah, Dubai.

Coming from a family of medical practitioners, she moved to India to pursue her medical education. She pursued her MBBS from the Shridevi Institute for Medical Science from Tumakuru (Karnataka) and currently was pursuing her MD at the Kanachur Medical College in Mangaluru. All thorough her academic career she maintained good grades and was known for her educational brilliance.

She got married last year to Dr Shawafer Muhammed, who also is pursuing his postgraduate medical education.

As per the latest media report by the Khaleej Times, after being tested positive for the virus, the baby passed away in her womb and the doctors had to remove the baby to avoid further complications.

As her health worsened, she got admitted to the intensive care unit of Indiana Hospital in Mangaluru, Karnataka. Gradually she tested negative for the virus but had to remain under treatment as she was having breathing difficulties. Ultimately, two days after her report came negative, the doctor breathed her last in the hospital.

While commenting on the tragic incident, a former batchmate of the late doctor told Gulf News, "Apparently, she did not have major symptoms initially. Doctors tried to save the baby first. Unfortunately, they could not and she also succumbed to the complications."

The daily adds that her final rites were performed at her hometown Thalassery in Kerala on Wednesday.

"Despite best treatment given to her by our doctors, we could not save her baby and her life," Indiana Hospital and Heart Institute said in its official statement, Khaleej Times has reported.

The father of the medico, Abdul Basheer owns a spare parts business in Deira, adds Khaleej Times. Her uncle, Nasnas told the daily, "She secured 99.4 percent in her Grade 10 exams. She was very good at studies and wanted to be a surgeon."

"She got married post the lockdown in India and was very active in her profession since then," he added.

A spokesperson of Delhi Private School in Sharjah told Gulf News, "All her teachers were totally shocked and devastated. Her senior grade class teacher was in tears even today. She remembered her as a bright student, who was mature beyond her age and very polite. Teachers have very fond memories with her."

Sharing his condolences, Dr DK Mahabalaraju, principal of Shridevi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Hospital mentioned in the circular to the Institution's fraternity, "Loss of a young and energetic doctor. Let her soul rest in peace. May God give strength to the family to face the tragedy."

Remembering the brilliant lovely friend, a friend of the late doctor from India told the daily, "Her family is still in shock and nobody is in a position to talk. The double tragedy is indeed heartbreaking."

Sharing the tragic incident on the Twitter handle, All India Medical Students' Association, "In a tragic incident, a 25-year-old doctor from Kerala named Dr. C C Maha Basheer recently passed away after battling Covid-19, she was 5-months pregnant. The doctor, who was pursuing her post-graduation from Kanachur Medical College. Rip."
