UP: Doctor on Covid duty beaten up, told to vacate house by landlord

Uttar Pradesh - While the Uttar Pradesh government promoted a decree for the benefits of those thousand doctors, nurses and health care workers who are keeping their life in danger during our fight against Corona, there are still reports of violent, even brutal attacks on them.

Dr Rajiv Ranjan, the doctor in charge of a quarantine center situated in the district hospital of Deoria was recently brutally attacked, beaten and even compelled to evacuate his rented apartment immediately. This was because he was presumed of being infected by Corona and accused of spreading the contagious disease in the locality.

As reported by Hindustan Times, on Tuesday night, the owner of the house accompanied by the husband of the ward corporator and three others forcibly entered the doctor's place and asked him to vacant the place immediately without any notice or previous warning regarding searching new accommodation.

They argued, as the doctor works in a quarantine center, he is exposed to being infected and the people of the locality are forced to live in constant fear of getting infected. Though the doctor tried reasonably explaining the situation, instead of understanding they resorted to violence and started beating him.

After registering the official complaint against the five involved in the crime, the police has already placed two of them under arrest. Sri Pati Mishra, SP of Deoria told HT "The house owner Dilip and corporator's husband Nanhe have been arrested. Three others are on the run". They have been booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), 333 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from duty) and so on.

The doctors, nurses, health workers and paramedical service providers are hailed as the Corona warriors all over the world. The Uttar Pradesh government, in fact, published an ordinance on 6th May stating that as major a penalty as 5 lakhs and even imprisonment can be applied for a person assaulting these warriors. Even the central government has amended the Epidemics Act to make violence against doctors stringently punishable
