Bengaluru: In a series of tweets that have gone viral, a Bengaluru-based doctor has recently revealed a shocking dowry demand made by a highly ranked doctor from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) who reportedly asked her friend, also a doctor, for a dowry of Rs 50 crore.

According to the doctor on social media, her friend is doing an MD in anaesthesia and is specialising further with a fellowship in liver transplant anaesthesia in Hyderabad. The doctor claimed that her friend was in talks for marriage and was reportedly asked to provide Rs 50 crore as dowry by a doctor who achieved Rank 1 in the AIIMS entrance for MCh in Urology.

Expressing frustration at how even the most educated professionals continue to practice the dowry system in marriage, “So AIIMS rank 1 Uro MCh is asking 50 crores dowry from my friend who is doing MD Anaesthesia… Have some shame, will you?” she wrote in a post on 'X' that went viral on social media.

She claimed that the dowry demand has left her friend devastated who had been crying ever since she heard of the dowry demand as her family is on the verge of exhausting their life savings to fulfil the demand of the groom.

Questioning the value of education when a person has to depend on dowry demands, the doctor in her post said, "What's the purpose of your education, rank and merits when you have no guts to stand on your own feet."

“I’ve been on the phone with her all morning as she cries. Her parents believe it’s an expectation in the Telugu community that marrying off their daughter requires a dowry, which would wipe out their retirement savings. She also has a younger sister, and they fear facing the same dowry demands for her as well,” she added.

She further questioned how dowry practice continues to exist in modern society, "It's 2024 and still?"

Reaction from netizens

The series of Twitter posts has sparked widespread anger and disbelief from X users who expressed their opinion and experiences. In a post, a user said, "This is nauseating to read. The guy is a low-life. It is certainly a problem, it perpetuates gender inequality and commodifies relationships. I do not understand how any secure man can justify asking for a dowry."

While some supported the female doctor, some stated that the groom is right to demand such a high dowry. "Demand supply....more demand...more the price...don't blame the groom....he knows his market value," said another user.

“While I agree dowry is wrong, why aren't we considering the difference in branch? Mbbs girls are demanding MD boys. MD girls are demanding DM girls. Don't you fume when you see this? Reverse dowry is also bad,” an X user opined.
