AIIMS Madurai

Madurai: In a significant development, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Madurai is set to begin functioning with 150 beds in its first phase from January 2027, AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP IS Inbadurai announced on Tuesday following a meeting with institute director Dr Vir Singh Negi.

Inbadurai, who was nominated to the institute's governing body by the Union Ministry of Health in September, said Negi had briefed him on the progress of construction at the Thoppur campus. In a post on X, the MP said construction had reached its final stage and expressed confidence that the hospital would begin functioning with 150 beds in January.

The announcement follows the Centre’s September 17 submission before the Madras High Court that full-fledged outpatient services would commence on January 1, 2027. However, that undertaking did not specify when inpatient services would begin, reports TOI.

According to the Centre's status report submitted to the court, the overall project completion was expected to reach 59% by the end of September. The report stated that 88% of Phase I works and 35% of Phase II works had been completed.

Meanwhile, the Thoppur campus has also begun accommodating medical students. By August 31, five batches of MBBS students who had previously studied at Ramanathapuram Government Medical College were shifted to the AIIMS campus.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for Madurai AIIMS in January 2019. However, construction work began only in May 2024, following years of delays. The project is largely financed through a loan from a Japanese development agency.

Once operational, AIIMS Madurai is expected to expand access to specialised medical treatment, advanced diagnostic facilities and healthcare education in the region.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that full-fledged outpatient department (OPD) services at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Madurai are scheduled to begin on January 1, 2027, the Union Health Ministry informed the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday.
