Assault on Nurse, three staff at KEM Hospital after teen's death; four booked

The deceased, identified as Ganesh Kolekar, a 19-year-old resident of Sangli who had been admitted to Ward 41 of KEM Hospital for approximately a month due to liver failure and was awaiting a liver donor. 

On Monday evening, doctors informed the family that his condition was critical. A senior doctor said, "We had told the family at the time of admission itself that finding a liver might be difficult”, according to TOI. 

Soon after the teenager's death, tensions escalated, and some of the relatives allegedly assaulted a nurse and three security guards. Hospital authorities later filed a complaint with the Bhoiwada Police Station. 

The police have registered a case against four relatives in connection with the incident, although the hospital staff claimed that 14 to 15 relatives were involved in the attack. 

However, Ganesh passed away on Monday night. After this, the hospital administration completed the necessary medical formalities and sent the body to the mortuary.

Around 5:30 AM on Tuesday, approximately 15 relatives reportedly arrived at the hospital and turned violent. One of the relatives was a lawyer. The accused have been identified as Gayabai Sawant, Baliram Sawant, Babasaheb Jadhav, and an unidentified woman, reports The Daily.

They attacked a 34-year-old nurse, inflicting severe injuries near her eye and on her arm. Two male security guards and one female security guard were also injured. One of the relatives was a lawyer, yet they reacted emotionally and beat up our staff.

Following the incident, the unions subsequently gathered at the Dean's office and demanded that an FIR be registered against the relatives.

Meanwhile, the injured nurse underwent a CT scan, the report of which came back normal. It is expected that she will be discharged from the hospital on Wednesday.

According to her complaint, the incident occurred around 5:00 AM on Tuesday, when Kolekar passed away during treatment. She alleged that the patient's relatives attacked her and the security personnel on duty; they verbally abused them and prevented them from performing their duties.

The case has been registered under those sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita that pertain to using assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging their duty, and to intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of the peace.
