Private Hospital Faces Closure After Woman Alleges Burns During Caesarean Procedure
Sundargarh: A gynaecologist at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH), Rourkela, has been barred by the Sundargarh administration from engaging in private practice, and the administration has also ordered the temporary closure of a private hospital following allegations of negligence during a caesarean section.
The action was taken by Chief District Medical and Public Health Officer (CDMO) Dr. S.C. Mohanty on Thursday, after allegations that a pregnant woman sustained severe burn injuries on her private parts and thighs during a Caesarean section (C-section) at 'New Life Multi-Speciality Hospital', a private nursing home in Sundargarh city.

Speaking to TNIE, the CDMO clarified that the doctor would continue to serve at the DHH. “Prima facie, the inquiry team found that the woman suffered burn injuries after the electrosurgical device used during the C-section exploded due to a short circuit. The spirit applied to the skin for disinfection during the surgery might have led to the fire from the explosion of the device,” said Dr Mohanty.
According to the news reports, the patient and her husband initially visited the Sundargarh District Headquarters Hospital as her expected delivery date approached. The couple alleged that an obstetrician and gynaecologist advised them to get her admitted to his private nursing home in Sundargarh town on April 10.
The patient subsequently underwent a C-section at the private hospital, delivered a baby boy, and was discharged on April 14.
However, after returning home, she reportedly discovered burn injuries on her private parts and thigh region. As the pain and burning sensation persisted, the couple confronted the doctors, who allegedly admitted the injuries were caused by an accidental explosion of a diathermy device, an electromagnetic instrument used in surgical procedures, reports Sambad English.
As her condition worsened, she was admitted to the Ispat General Hospital (IGH), where doctors reportedly informed the family that multiple layers of skin had been damaged. They also indicated that she might require plastic surgery to address the injuries.
Following the incident, the couple filed a complaint at the Sundargarh Town Police Station on May 15, seeking action against those responsible.
