Kanniyakumari: The death of a fetus at Kanniyakumari Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has sparked allegations of medical negligence and prompted a departmental inquiry. In response to the complaint, the dean assured that appropriate action would be taken against the doctor involved.

The woman, who is a resident of Vadakku Tamaraikulam, had been receiving prenatal care at the government facility, visited the hospital a few days before the incident. Her husband claimed that the attending doctor failed to advise hospital admission for delivery, despite the pregnancy being in its late stage. On Monday, when the woman returned to the hospital due to complications, a scan revealed that the fetus had died.

Following the tragic discovery, doctors performed a cesarean section with the patient’s consent to remove the deceased fetus.

Speaking to TNIE, Dean V Ramalakshmi said that when the woman visited the hospital on May 15, the doctor, observing it as a high-risk case, advised her to get admitted. The woman's relatives refused to get her admitted, the dean added.

The woman’s relatives, with the support of local leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), submitted a petition to the hospital administration. According to police sources, the fetus was handed over to the family following the discussion.

In response to the allegations and growing public concern, Dean Ramalakshmi has assured that a formal departmental inquiry will be conducted to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine if any lapses in medical care occurred.

This incident has reignited discussions around maternal care standards in government hospitals.
