Hyderabad: Fire breaks out at Sri Vani hospital, no casualties reported

Hyderabad: A major fire broke out at the Sri Vani hospital in the Hyderabad district of Telangana. However, no casualties have been reported as 19 persons, including two newborns were rescued.

"The fire broke at 7 am on Saturday in Sri Vani hospital well known as Old Farhat Hospital in Malakpet area of Hyderabad," said Srinivas, Circle inspector, Malakpet police station.

The officer further informed that the fire broke out due to a short circuit, however, it has now been doused. 

As per the police, no casualties have been reported. A case has been registered under the relevant section of law, added the police. ANI

While speaking with TOI, J Goverdhan Reddy, Malakpet station fire officer said, "After we reached the spot, on one side, we started fire-fighting operations and, on the other, some fire personnel started to break glass panes to diffuse the smoke. When we managed to enter the building, on the first floor we found two new mothers, who gave birth two days ago, struggling to rescue themselves amid thick smoke. The fire first broke out on the ground floor and it rapidly spread to other floors as a lot of papers and other combustible material were dumped. Apart from this, there was false ceiling too." 

According to Reddy, the fire team simultaneously managed to switch off the main transformer and another transformer in the surrounding area. The firefighters managed to rescue the patients, though it took two hours to control the fire.

"If there was no bridge, all the 19 persons would have got trapped inside the building. The front block is an old building, which is used for both hospital and residential purpose. There is an interconnected bridge on first and second floors," fire officials said.
