Kozhikode: The death of a newborn baby and the mother at a private medical college in Kozhikode, prompted the state health department to order an inquiry into the incident after the victim's family alleged negligence on the part of the doctors.

According to the PTI report, while the baby died at the private hospital on Thursday, the mother, who developed various complications, passed away at another private hospital on Friday, police said on Friday.

The family of the woman has alleged medical negligence and malpractice on the part of the private hospital.

The police sources revealed that the 35-week pregnant woman was admitted to a private hospital on September 7. The family was reportedly informed of the baby’s death on September 12, leading to their complaint against the hospital.

According to a media report in the Onmanorama, The doctors confirmed signs of foetal distress on Thursday morning and she was immediately shifted to the operation theatre to undergo C-section. However, the patient's condition deteriorated suddenly, and a uterine rupture ( tear in the uterine wall) was spotted. This led to placental abruption (separation of placenta from the uterine wall before birth). The blood supply to the baby was cut off, and the baby died.

The hospital reported that Aswathy’s condition rapidly deteriorated from a normal delivery to severe complications.

Despite undergoing a C-section, receiving 45 units of blood, and being transferred for ECMO, she suffered cardiac arrest and died on Friday morning despite resuscitation efforts.

In addition to the case related to the infant's death, police have announced that a separate case of unnatural death will be registered in connection with the mother’s death.

Kozhikode district health authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. A preliminary inquiry is underway to determine the medical mishap's details and causes. The hospital management has not yet issued an official statement.
