Gurgaon: Following an internal study that revealed chest injuries account for nearly 70% of poly-trauma admissions in the NCR and are a leading cause of death among Indians aged 15-45 years, Medanta Hospital has launched a 24x7 chest trauma support service.

As per the news reports, the study, which analysed 114 chest trauma patients treated at Medanta between 2021 and 2025, found that many fatalities were not caused by delays in reaching hospitals, but by the lack of specialised care during the critical early hours of treatment. Road traffic accidents emerged as the primary cause, contributing to 42% of chest injury cases.

Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Arvind Kumar, Chairman, Institute of Chest Surgery at Medanta, said, “Most chest trauma cases are managed conservatively, but delayed surgeries can increase morbidity levels. Through this centre, Medanta reinforces its commitment to advancing chest trauma care, supporting first-line care providers, and improving survival and recovery outcomes for patients with life-threatening chest injuries,” reports the

The newly-launched service, to be headed by Dr Arvind Kumar, Chairman of the Institute of Chest Surgery at Medanta, aims to strengthen emergency care for chest trauma patients.

Speaking to TOI, he said, "We will carry out workshops with doctors of different hospitals in North India. We will also provide them technical support on call that will be directly answered by a chest specialist." Initially, the service will cover Haryana, Punjab and western Uttar Pradesh.

The initiative also includes guidance for standardized chest tube insertion, reducing complications and ensuring timely interventions. Patients requiring advanced care can be safely referred and transferred under Medanta’s supervision.
