MGMMCH set for Rs 394 crore upgrade, MBBS seats to increase to 250
Jharkhand has approved a Rs 394 crore upgrade project for MGMMCH, aimed at expanding MBBS and PG seats, developing a 500-bed super-speciality hospital and introducing robotic and spinal surgery services.
Jamshedpur: Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) is set for a major upgrade under a Rs 394 crore state government project aimed at increasing MBBS seats from 150 to 250 and PG seats from 52 to 150 over the next three years.
The upgraded facility will also introduce robotic and spinal surgery services.
Jharkhand Health Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh said the health department has sought detailed information from the medical college regarding its existing infrastructure, faculty strength, specialist doctors, medical equipment and digital and management systems. The assessment is being conducted to ensure that the institution meets the requirements of the National Medical Commission (NMC) for the proposed increase in medical seats.

MGMMCH Principal Dr Sanjay Kumar and Superintendent Dr Balram Jha have been asked to provide details of the current status of the institution and its requirements, reports Press Reader.
According to officials, the hospital management has been asked to submit information on its application for increasing medical seats, along with details of ICU, Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU), blood bank and blood storage facilities. Data on doctors, nurses, paramedical personnel, laboratory technicians and other healthcare staff will also be assessed.
The Jharkhand State Building Corporation (JSBC) will prepare a detailed project report for developing a 500-bed super-speciality hospital on the MGMMCH Sakchi campus. The proposed infrastructure will also include a modern library, hostels and other required facilities.
Meanwhile, the state government is also preparing to strengthen healthcare services across districts. Civil surgeons have been instructed to begin preparations for converting district sadar hospitals into multi-speciality facilities and initiate recruitment of specialist doctors.
The government plans to appoint 125 hospital managers to strengthen hospital administration, while district-level facilities will receive dedicated management support. A 50-bed maternity and child hospital with 10 doctors is also planned in the districts.
