Motilal Nehru Medical College constitutes Tumor Board for rare, complex cancers

The initiative aims to ensure that critically ill patients receive comprehensive treatment, particularly in cases where traditional treatments often may not be adequate.

Under this new system, patients' medical reports, including pathology results, imaging scans, and clinical history, will be jointly reviewed by a panel of experts.

The institute has brought together experts from various fields so that they can collectively decide on the best possible method of treatment. The board comprises experts from cancer surgery, pathology, radiology, chemotherapy, and plastic surgery.

These experts will analyse how the cancer originated, how far it has spread, the type of tumor involved, and its impact on the body's vital organs, and only then will they be able to reach a consensus regarding surgery or other treatment options, reports TOI. 

However, the first meeting of the Board is expected to take place soon. Prominent members include renowned experts such as Dr Sapan Srivastava, Dr Pankaj Kamra, Dr Anshul Singh, Dr Kanchanar Verma, Dr Radha Kesarwani, Dr Surendra Gupta, Dr Virendra Singh, Dr B.M. Singhal, and Dr Mohit Jain.

Meanwhile, according to Dr Kanchanar Verma, this board will prove to be extremely beneficial for patients with complex cancer cases, as collective expertise will enable the formulation of more precise and effective treatment plans.

When cancer reaches an advanced stage or involves a rare condition, treating it becomes extremely difficult. In such cases, treatment decisions based solely on routine reports, such as biopsies, may not be sufficient.

Experts believe that this collaborative approach will not only improve the quality of treatment but also enhance the survival chances of patients battling advanced-stage cancer.
