Patient dies after allegedly receiving expired IV fluid at NMMC Hospital, 3 staff suspended

Navi Mumbai: A 50-year-old man died at Fortis Hospital in Vashi on Thursday, days after he was allegedly administered expired IV fluid at an NMMC hospital on August 31. Following the incident, the civic body suspended two staff nurses and a pharmacist for alleged dereliction of duty.
The exact cause of his death is yet to be established, with postmortem and forensic reports awaited.
According to the news reports, the deceased, a sweeper at Shree Jagruteshwar Shiv Temple in Sector 7, was admitted to NMMC Hospital on August 31 after complaining of dizziness and vomiting. Hospital authorities said he was subsequently diagnosed with dengue, falciparum malaria, and jaundice.

The patient was allegedly administered an expired IV fluid during his treatment at the civic hospital. His condition deteriorated the following day, after which he was shifted to Fortis Hospital under the NMMC quota. He remained on ventilator support in the ICU for three days before succumbing to his illness on Thursday morning.
Following the incident, NMMC commissioner Kailas Shinde has suspended three hospital staff members for alleged dereliction of duty. Those suspended include two staff nurses and a pharmacist.
Speaking to TOI, Dr Ravindra Mhatre, NMMC medical superintendent, said the hospital’s medicine inventory was checked on Thursday and the IV fluid administered to the patient was found to have expired in July 2026. “The doctor who conducted the postmortem has reserved an opinion on the cause of death. The viscera have been preserved and will be sent to the Kalina Forensic Laboratory for chemical analysis, while the histopathology report will be sent to Sion Hospital,” Mhatre said.
The patient’s body was handed over to his family after the postmortem.
Earlier, the patient’s two sons, along with Bajrang Dal activists, had protested at the office of the NMMC medical superintendent, alleging negligence on the part of hospital staff. They claimed that their father developed itching and rashes after the IV fluid was administered and that his condition worsened the following day.
On Thursday, NMMC Mayor Sujata Patil announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for Khadse’s next of kin. The cause of death is yet to be established, pending the postmortem and forensic reports, TOI reports.
