Ranchi: A dedicated gastrointestinal (GI) surgery department offering advanced surgical facilities will soon be launched under the Ayushman Bharat scheme at Ranchi Sadar Hospital. The initiative aims to provide specialised surgical care at affordable costs by engaging private specialist doctors within the government-run hospitals.

According to the news reports, health authorities said the process of appointing specialist doctors has recently been completed, and the new services are expected to begin next year. With the launch of the GI surgery department, several high-cost procedures that are currently available only at private hospitals will now be offered at the government-run facility.

Speaking to TOIRanchi Civil Surgeon Dr Prabhat Kumar said, "It will bring major relief to patients from economically weaker sections, who are often forced to seek treatment in private facilities due to the unavailability of specialised services in government hospitals. The gastroenterology department is not operational even at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, underlining the importance of the new department”.

He further stated that nephrology services at the hospital are being expanded in view of the rising number of kidney-related cases. The recruitment process for an additional nephrologist has been completed, and from the New Year, two nephrology specialists will provide services together. Currently, the nephrology outpatient department operates only two days a week, but from next month it will function six days a week.

He noted that the expansion would substantially reduce waiting times for dialysis patients and improve continuity of care for those suffering from chronic kidney diseases.

Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Bimlesh Kumar Singh said the hospital also plans to introduce the services of a neurologist and an MD physician in the near future. Speaking to TOI, he added, “The number of patients visiting the hospital is increasing day by day, making it necessary to strengthen the availability of specialist doctors. The addition of these services will reduce the need for patients to travel to Rims or expensive private hospitals for treatment.”
