Odisha: The Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla, has ordered an inquiry after a newborn allegedly fell into a bucket during delivery, prompting allegations of medical negligence. The incident has raised concerns over patient safety and the functioning of the obstetrics and gynaecology department.

Hospital authorities stated that the incident is under investigation and further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.

As reported by Odisha Bytes, the incident occurred when a 32-year-old woman carrying twins was admitted to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology for delivery. The report alleged that one of the twins died in the womb following a delay in receiving medical attention.

It was further alleged that during the delivery of the second baby, the newborn slipped from the mother's womb and fell into a bucket placed below the delivery table. The newborn was immediately shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where treatment is ongoing.

The incident has sparked concern among patients and attendants, raising questions about patient safety practices during deliveries at the hospital. It has also renewed attention on emergency preparedness and availability of senior doctors in government healthcare facilities, particularly during night shifts.

The hospital administration has ordered an inquiry to determine whether established clinical protocols were followed and to identify any lapses, if found.

The incident comes amid ongoing scrutiny of VIMSAR over previous allegations of medical lapses. According to Odisha Bytes, the institute's Obstetrics and Gynaecology department had earlier come under the scanner following multiple maternal deaths reported within a short period, prompting the state government to seek an inquiry. The latest investigation is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the delivery and recommend further action based on its findings.
