Wenlock hospital to be upgraded into regional multi-speciality centre: Dinesh Gundu Rao
Mangaluru- In a boost to healthcare infrastructure, Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao recently announced that Wenlock District Hospital will be upgraded into a regional multi-speciality hospital.
The announcement was made on Friday during the foundation stone laying ceremony for a new OPD block, which is expected to be constructed at an estimated cost of approximately ₹70 crore, and various other development projects were launched at Wenlock District Hospital.
Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader, MLC Ivan D'Souza, District Hospital Superintendent Dr D.S. Shivaprakash, and DHO Dr H.R. Thimmaiah were also present at the inaugural ceremony.
According to the TOI news report, Rao stated that Wenlock Hospital is set to receive an investment of ₹96 crore through KMC for the development of necessary infrastructure. Discussions regarding an MoU between the government and KMC are currently underway. As part of this initiative, a new agreement is being formulated under which KMC will step forward to provide additional infrastructure, staff, or undertake necessary construction work for the hospital.
He further stated that the Health Department has also signed an MoU with the district's medical colleges to provide better services to poor patients in government hospitals. He expressed concern regarding like-minded organisations that opposed the agreements made with private medical colleges.
“Through the agreements with private medical colleges, poor patients will get advanced service for free. We have made agreements with private medical colleges to provide enhanced medical care in community health centres. Those who oppose and fight against this move on the streets may talk to us and get all their doubts cleared,” he said.
The Minister also announced that the Health Department will open four additional care centres for Endosulfan victims in Dakshina Kannada. Currently, there are two centres in the district.
