Puducherry: A police constable and his friend were arrested for sexually harassing a medical college student at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) campus in Puducherry.
The incident happened while a week-long students festival, 'Spandan', was happening there. The festival, which had started on Monday, attracted medical students from various medical colleges across the nation, and the 20-year-old had come from Hyderabad with her friends for the same.

On Thursday midnight, the duo came on a bike and began harassing her while she was walking alone in the parking area near the auditorium, reports The New Indian Express. Following the incident, the girl registered a complaint with the D Nagar police, who filed a case on Friday and began their investigation.
The police said, "We checked CCTV footage recorded on the premise, and with the help of the details given by the girl, we identified the duo." Further, the police said that the girl was harassed by a 31-year-old constable from the same station, V Kannan, and his 20-year-old friend S Siva.
Both were absconding, and the police arrested both of them after a search. A senior officer said, "A report has been sent to higher officials for departmental action." Following the investigation, the accused duo were remanded in the central prison in Kalapet after court proceedings.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about a similar incident where the chairman of a private medical college in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu had been arrested after a complaint was filed by a student accusing the chairman of sexual harassment and mental torture. A private video of the accused with the student was circulating within the college, following which the students staged a protest demanding the immediate arrest of John.
