Jaipur: A city-based orthopedic and joint replacement surgeon, who performed a hip reconstruction surgery on the oldest woman in India, made it into a national record.

Dr Ranat Ramjas Vishnoi, attached to Shably Hospital in Jaipur, has been presented with the certificate of world record from World Records India Institute, by the Governor of Rajasthan, Kalyan Singh recently at Raj Bhawan.

The surgery was performed on April 22, 2017, on a 104-year-old, Basanti Devi, who suffered multiple fractures in her hip. Devi had suffered a fall which led to the fracture and traumatic arthritis of hip joints. The previous joint replacement of such an old aged woman is registered with the UK.

The complication was such that the pain spread to her entire backside, making her unable to even move out of bed. It was found that ball joint in the hip of the patient had fractured and was touching the socket causing arthritis.

Surgery is very risky at this age as there was a chance of excessive bleeding and other complications such as organ failure. Her family brought her to Dr Vishnoi, as he had been associated with various orthopaedic and joint replacement surgeries in London for a long time. In London, such surgery on elderly people is very common.

In this case, Dr Vishnoi adopted the modular bipolar technique. “The patient was treated by forming new holes with modular bipolar technique to correct the multiple fractures. There are joint replacement repairs performed abroad, but the case of new hatch is not on the record so far,” Dr Vishnoi explained to DNA.

Speaking on the national record, Dr Vishnoi told HT, “This honour is not only for me but also for Rajasthan. Inspired by this, we will try to carry out such complex and rare surgeries in the future.”
