Agartala: In an MBBS admission scam, a 19-year-old MBBS aspirant from Agartala was defrauded of Rs 21 lakh on the pretext of securing a confirmed medical seat at Calcutta National Medical College.

The candidate claimed that one day he received a call from a man, who identified himself as a representative of an education firm in Pune. The man, along with 4 others allegedly orchestrated a scheme involving forged documents in the name of the West Bengal Medical Counselling Committee.

The fraudsters, posing as officials, deceived a candidate by promising him a seat through the donor quota. They then demanded money and instructed him to come to the Calcutta medical college Hospital. Upon arrival, the accused led him into a restricted area using what they claimed were "official keys." The candidate alleged that he handed over the money inside Swasthya Bhawan where he was allegedly shown an allotment letter.

However, according to the TOI media news report, upon realising he had been scammed, the victim immediately filed a complaint at the Beniapukur police station.

Medical Dialogues had recently reported a similar case where two individuals allegedly defrauded 10 students of Rs 1.3 crore. The Baner police are currently searching for these two fraudsters. Police suspect that the men operated from an office in Balewadi, where they promised the aspirants admission to various medical colleges in Maharashtra.

The crime occurred between November 1st and December 6th and came to light when the father of one student, a 52-year-old man from Chandrapur, filed a complaint with the police on Sunday. Senior Inspector Chandrashekhar Sawant said, "The suspects were in possession of sensitive data, including the names and contact details of students who had appeared for the common entrance test for admission to both government and private medical colleges."
