GMCH Chandigarh final year MBBS student commits suicide

Chandigarh: In an unfortunate incident, a final-year MBBS student of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the sixth floor of the E-block of the institute.

Shortly before the incident, the student reportedly sent individual "goodbye" messages to several close friends. Worried by the unexpected texts, they immediately attempted to call him, but it was already too late. While the motive remains unclear, police suspect the death to be a case of suicide.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening after the student left home around 7 pm, saying he was going to the library at GMCH-32 and would return by 9 pm. After arriving at the hospital, the student reportedly visited the library on the sixth floor of E-Block.

The hospital staff told Punjab News Line that he briefly interacted with a security guard before heading upstairs and sent farewell messages to his friends at around 8:20 pm. Approximately 10 minutes later, he allegedly jumped from the building.

After being informed about the incident, the police shifted the body to the GMCH mortuary and launched an investigation to determine the circumstances leading up to the incident.

Speaking to HT, GMCH director principal Dr Ravneet Kaur said, "The incident occurred around 8.30 pm. At present, it appears to be a case of suicide, but there is no confirmation yet. The matter is being investigated. Counselling sessions for students are in place – they are conducted every Wednesday."

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that a first-year postgraduate medico in the department of Internal Medicine was found dead inside a washroom at the Trauma Centre of GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh. The junior resident doctor was found unconscious inside a locked bathroom cubicle after colleagues became concerned over his prolonged absence during duty hours. Staff members reportedly forced the door open after repeated knocks went unanswered.
