Odisha NEET 2026 candidate allegedly commits suicide after results declaration

Berhampur: Following the declaration of NEET 2026 results, a 20-year-old medical aspirant from Haladiapadar allegedly committed suicide on Thursday night.
According to the police, the deceased student’s family found her hanging from a noose in her room on Friday morning.
Speaking to the family members, they informed that the student had appeared for the NEET-UG exam for the second consecutive year after failing to secure a medical seat previously. Determined to become a doctor, she had spent several months preparing for the exam and expected to score around 600 out of 720 marks.
However, she became distressed after the results were declared on Thursday. Her parents said they were unaware of her exact score but suspected that she took this drastic step out of disappointment with her performance in the exam.
The candidate had an excellent academic record, as she had secured good marks in both the High School Certificate (HSC) and Plus II examinations.
The family further stated that on Friday night, the student went into her room and locked the door from the inside. When she did not respond the next morning, they broke the door and found her hanging.
Following this, her family immediately informed the Golanthara police, who arrived at the scene and took them to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
The body was sent for a post-mortem and later handed over to the family. The police have registered a case and initiated an investigation. However, the police stated that there were no signs of foul play, and further investigation is underway.
Speaking to the TNIE, Tuna Sasamal, inspector-in-charge of Golanthara police station, said: “We have registered a case and initiated an investigation. The exact cause of death will be ascertained after the post-mortem report is received”.
