New Delhi: In a disturbing incident, Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital has come under controversy after a cockroach was allegedly found in food served at the doctors' hostel mess, raising serious concerns over food safety and hygiene standards.

Taking steps in the matter, the hospital administration has initiated an inquiry and hygiene inspection and assured action against those found responsible for not maintaining hygiene standards.

The matter came to light after a resident doctor staying at the hostel allegedly found the insect in the food served at the mess and shared photographs of it. The incident quickly raised concerns among hostel residents over food safety and hygiene standards within the hospital premises.

According to the complainant reported by TOI, the issue was immediately reported to the mess authorities. However, the initial response from the staff was allegedly "extremely casual".

"This is not just about taste or hygiene preference anymore — this is a basic food safety concern,” the complainant said, seeking stricter monitoring of kitchen hygiene standards and accountability of mess staff.

Following the complaint, hospital authorities initiated an internal inquiry into the incident. A hospital official said that strict action would be taken against those found responsible for not maintaining hygiene standards in the Doctors’ Mess. "Hygiene checks have also been initiated,” said the official.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported about a viral social media post on X that more than 50 students at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, AIIMS Guwahati, suffered food poisoning after consuming mess food.

The post shared by a parent claimed that his son, an MBBS student at the institute, along with more than 50 students, fell ill after consuming unhygienic food served at the institute’s mess facility. The students allegedly reported insects and hair in their meals. However, the institute has denied claims of mass food poisoning, stating that only a single suspected case has been identified.
