RIMS Ranchi MBBS student found dead in hostel room

Ranchi: In a tragic incident, a second-year MBBS student of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, allegedly committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling in his hostel room.

Prima facie, it appeared to be a case of alleged suicide, Bariyatu Police Station officer-in-charge Manoj Kumar said, adding that the exact cause of death would be confirmed after the post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, the institute’s director said the student was suffering from depression, though the reason behind it is not known.

As per UNI news agency report, the incident took place after the student had gone to his room after dinner on Friday night. His friends found him unconscious on Saturday morning and rushed him to the Trauma Centre at RIMS, where doctors declared him dead.

After receiving the information, the Bariatu police reached the spot and initiated an investigation. Bariatu police station in-charge Manoj Kumar said further legal action was being taken and the student's family members had been informed.

“As information was received, we reached the spot. The door of his hostel room was locked from the inside. We broke the door and entered. His body was found hanging from the ceiling fan there,” Bariyatu Police Station officer-in-charge Manoj Kumar told PTI.

"No suicide note was recovered from the hostel room. The police have launched a detailed investigation," the officer said. 

Police said the reason behind the alleged suicide was yet to be ascertained. The room is expected to be examined as part of the investigation.

RIMS Director Dr Rajkumar expressed grief over the incident and described the student as academically bright. He said preliminary information suggested that the student may have been suffering from depression, though the exact circumstances would become clear only after investigation. The director also said RIMS would organise awareness sessions for students on stress and mental health issues related to medical studies.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Kumar said, "His body has been kept in the mortuary of RIMS, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted. Further procedures will be carried out after his family members arrive."
