Suicide

Jabalpur: Following the death of a first-year MBBS student at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College and Hospital nearly a week ago, Jabalpur police investigating the case revealed that the student took his life after being in emotional distress. However, his family has refused to accept this reason and believes foul play was involved.

Medical Dialogues had reported that the medical college and hospital superintendent, Dr Arvind Sharma, informed that Shivansh Gupta allegedly jumped off the third floor of the boys’ hostel number 4 of the medical college. His batchmates have told the police that he was in acute depression for around a fortnight, but didn’t share the actual problem with anyone. He was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition due to multiple injuries to the head and neck, but did not survive.

Initially, there were suspicions that ragging may have pushed him to take this extreme step, but police investigations have revealed a different angle. According to the police, the student was emotionally attached to a classmate and wanted to take her out on a ride on his new bike. The two had even made plans to meet, but at the last moment, the girl went out with someone else. This, the police say, hurt him deeply.

Shortly before the incident, Shivansh reportedly sent a message to the girl, as reported by Free Press Journal. The message read: “What I’m about to do, you should never do.” Moments later, he jumped from the hostel building.

Meanwhile, Shivansh’s family believes that their son did not die from suicide, but instead someone might have murdered him. They think that his death is part of a conspiracy.

His father, Santosh Gupta, questioned the suicide theory. He asked, "Why would a bright student who scored 660 in NEET and had just bought a new bike suddenly end his life?" He also pointed out that the language used in the message didn’t seem like something Shivansh would write.

His mother also said that even though her son was upset over the bike issue, he was not depressed. She believes something happened in the hostel that night, which is still being hidden.

The family also revealed that some seniors were jealous of Shivansh’s new bike. He had once told his mother that some students were troubling him, but the family thought it was just minor and harmless ragging.

Meanwhile, the college has now formed an internal committee to look into the matter, and the police are investigating all possible angles – including ragging, emotional distress, messages, phone records, and CCTV footage.

CSP Gwarighat, HR Pandey confirmed that there was an emotional angle to the case so far, but said that the investigation is still ongoing.
