Madhya Pradesh: In a shocking incident, an intoxicated police constable allegedly beat up an ENT doctor and an attendant at a hospital in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain district on Wednesday.
According to the media reports, Constable had visited the district hospital to get himself examined and a doctor there asked him to go to a flu clinic instead, Kotwali police station in-charge Manish Lodha said. The policeman, however, returned after a short while and started verbally abusing the doctor and proceeded to beat him up. The Constable has been suspended and the case is going under investigation.
When the constable reached the district hospital for a check-up after experiencing cold-like symptoms, the doctor who examined him concluded that it was common cold and asked him to get checked from general OPD, Ujjain civil surgeon.
The constable was led by the doctor to his destination and a request was made to a consultant to examine him; however, he had to wait as the senior doctor was held up with another patient and it enraged the constable who after that slapped the doctor and abused him. When an attendant came to the doctor's rescue, he too was assaulted, the doctor later said.
After the incident district hospital doctors went on strike and urged the district collector Dr Aseesh Singh to initiate strict actions against the constable under state act protecting doctors; however, they went back to work after securing assurances from high officials that justice will be served. The constable has been suspended and the city superintendent of police has been asked to investigate the matter.
Based on the doctor's complaint, Madhav Nagar area's city superintendent of police (CSP) Ravindra Varma has already started investigating the matter. While no one sustained serious injuries in the incident, it was found that the constable was in an inebriated state and his MLC (medico-legal case) was done, Lodha said, adding that the matter was being probed, reports PTI.
